Chicago Volvo Dealer Offers Update on Record-Holding Volvo Owner

It isn’t much of a stretch to say that most Volvo owners love their cars, but few have shown it quite like Irv Gordon.

Gordon, a retired science teacher from East Patchogue, N.Y., drives the highest mileage vehicle on the road – a 1966 Volvo P1800.  And, at age 70, Irv is still driving, with the 3 million mile mark just a few years away. Record Holder Visits Chicago Volvo Dealer

After the two-seat coupe debuted at the auto show in Brussels in 1960, production began a year later, making 2011 the 50th anniversary for the P1800.

Gordon purchased his P1800 in 1966 and drove it 1,500 miles within the first 48 hours.  Between a 125-mile round-trip daily commute and an obvious passion for driving, his P1800 reached 500,000 miles within 10 years.

When Gordon pulled onto the lot of Volvo of Lisle, a leading Chicago Volvo dealer, twenty years later in 1996, his Volvo had traveled nearly 1.5 million miles.

Just two years later, with his odometer at 1.69 million miles, he made the Guinness Book of World Records for most miles driven by a single owner in a non-commercial vehicle.

Chicago Volvo Dealer Congratulates Record Holder

Now with more than 2.8 million miles on his sporty red Volvo, Gordon confirmed his goal on his birthday last month of reaching 3 million miles before turning 73.

“Three million miles by my 73rd birthday sounds right,” Gordon said. “But, whether I reach that mark is more up to me than it is the car. The car’s parts have long proven they can take it, but I’m not so sure about my own. Either way, it will be a fantastic testament to the engineering genius of Volvo as well as to the resiliency of folks my age.”

Volvo of Lisle would like to congratulate Gordon on his amazing journey this far, and welcomes him to return to its Chicago Volvo dealership on his road to 3 million miles.

Synonymous with safety and, clearly from Gordon’s story, reliability, Volvo vehicles are a perfect choice for consumers in Chicago.

Chicago Volvo Dealership Shares News on Electric Volvo C30 Production in Europe

Sustainability is a key word for Volvo.

Volvo has made a very conscious effort to minimize its impact on the environment.  Earlier this year, Volvo of Lisle, the leading Chicago Volvo dealership, announced the release of Volvo’s Corporate Report, in which the automaker stressed the importance of sustainable practices.

Among the Report’s highlights were Volvo’s plans to produce a plug-in hybrid in 2012 and the introduction of seven fuel-efficient, low-emission diesel DRIVe models in Europe.  Hybrids and diesel engines are popular options among the environmentally-conscious given their reduced emissions, low fuel consumption, and consequently low operating costs.

Volvo has now taken yet another step on the road toward sustainability.

Volvo Cars has partnered with Swedish energy company Göteborg Energi to produce electric vehicles and recharging infrastructure.  As part of the agreement, Volvo will manufacture an initial group of 10 Volvo C30 electric cars for delivery in Europe this fall.

“This is a landmark first step,” said Lennart Stegland, director of the Volvo Car Corporation’s Special Vehicles division.

These initial vehicles will be equipped with advanced measuring instruments so Volvo can gather data on how driving habits and charging patterns affect the battery and lifetime of electric cars.

Often people assume that the shift to electric vehicles will necessitate great sacrifice, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.  Volvo’s C30 Electric has the same safety, comfort and interior space as the standard Volvo C30, but given its electric nature, it produces absolutely zero exhaust emissions.  The C30 can also travel 90 miles on one charge, more than enough to make the daily commute for many drivers.  And, if the C30 is recharged with electricity from renewable sources, travel becomes virtually free from carbon dioxide emissions.

“The future we see ahead is one in which our cars have no emissions that negatively impact the environment and our cars do not crash,” said President and CEO, Stephen Odell about sustainability at Volvo.  “And it’s not a question of if we get there – it’s a question of when.”

Volvo of Lisle, the first choice for customers seeking a Volvo dealer in Chicago, will be an excellent source of information on Volvo’s drive toward full sustainability.
