Chicago Volvo Dealer Presents Award-Winning 2011 Volvo S60

Volvo Car Corporation has won the Plus X Award for the Pedestrian Detection System unveiled in this year’s re-imagined Volvo S60, Chicago Volvo dealer, Volvo of Lisle announced. With the award Volvo furthers its reputation for safety innovation in the automobile industry with yet another life-saving feature.

The Plus X Awards were determined by a panel of 144 jurors from 32 countries, who judged over 1,000 products and chose the best based on innovation, quality, design, ease of operation and functionality, ergonomics and ecology.

Volvo’s distinction came in the Innovation category, where its detection feature earned the label “Best Product of the Year 2010″.

The Pedestrian Detection System with full auto brake combines a newly-developed radar unit in the front grille and a camera at the level of the rear-view mirror. These elements work together to spot pedestrians on the road ahead of the vehicle. If the driver fails to react in time, the system automatically activates full braking power.

Statistics reveal that half of all accidents involving pedestrians occur at speeds of less than 15.5 mph. The new Volvo system can completely prevent accidents of this type up to a speed of 21.7 mph. At higher speeds the system maximizes deceleration and thus substantially reduces the impact of a collision.

Volvo Cars invested more than five years and 300,000 miles of testing into the development of its new safety system, but the rewards are clearly worth any amount of work.
